He is the estranged biological father of Kyo Sohma, who belongs to the Sohma clan.

Appearance[]

Kyo's father heavily resembles his son, thanks to their similar facial features, but he's more gaunt and much more angry-looking. The manga depicts him with dark hair and dark eyes, which is retained in the 2019 anime.

Personality[]

Kyo's Father is a tremendously bitter, selfish and spiteful man who has mistreated his son and wife for years, and even blamed Kyo for the death of his wife, an event which is implied to be in large part driven by his own abusive conduct.

He views Kyo not as his son, much less as a human being, but rather as a monster that should be confined and never be allowed to see the light again, and despite the many years that have transcurred, he still remains obsessed over his belief that Kyo should be locked up.

Given the one born with the cat spirit is by the Sohma's rules an outcast and an abomination to be shunned and scorned, he was thus by proxy just as shunned as Kyo was by the rest of the family, fundamentally becoming a pariah and losing most of his social status. This rapid declination of his otherwise normal upstanding is hinted to be the primary reason why Kyo's father blames him for all his misfortunes, and thus ultimately revealing him as a pitiful, materialistic person.

When the curse breaks and Kyo confronts him, the father had long since lost any semblance of reason; still seeing Kyo as a monster (even with the proof the Cat spirit was gone) and thinking he would kill him when he defended himself from getting hit. The latter proving that the father believed Kyo would eventually seek revenue on him. Kyo could only think of his father as pathetic and wished him the best in life.

Story Overview[]

History[]

He is the biological father of Kyo Sohma. He always argued with his wife because she loved Kyo and was always overprotective of him. Both she and Kyo were shunned by members of the Sohma family. Eventually, the strain of protecting Kyo, being shunned and arguing with her husband was too much for her and she committed suicide by throwing herself in front of an upcoming train.

Kyo's father blamed Kyo for her death and abandoned him.[1]

[2]

Plot[]

He met up with Kazuma Sohma (Kyo's adoptive father) to discuss the matter of Kyo's confinement after high school. He argued that Kyo should be confined, while Kazuma coldly tells him that he will do anything to keep Kyo from that solitary room.[3]

Kyo confronts his father and tries to reconcile with him, and is violently rejected by the man. His father blamed Kyo for his life being made a misery and his mother for giving birth to him in the first place. He also told Kyo that it was impossible for him to live a normal life after Kyo told him of his plans to live the rest of his life with Tohru. After this confrontation, Kyo tells his father that he'll be back, and throws up afterward.[4]

It is unknown if he reconciled with his son by the end of the series, it is implied that he didn't.

Fruits Basket Another[]

Hajime Sohma mentions that despite being blood-related, he hates his biological grandfather and does not view him as his family.[5]

Relationships[]

Unnamed Wife[]

It was initially implied that he deeply loved his wife since he was distraught by her death and hated Kyo for driving her to suicide. However, as later revealed by Kyo, he probably verbally and emotionally abused his wife and blamed her for giving birth to Kyo and putting him into the situation.

Kyo Sohma[]

He absolutely hates his son and blames him for everything; including his mother's death and his own suffering. He has no care for him at all and wishes that he was never born, as he only brought misfortune to him. He views Kyo as a monster and sometimes refers to him as "it", which is why he wishes that a "horrendous monster" like Kyo should be locked up in the Cat room until he dies.

Kazuma Sohma[]

Although they can calmly interact with one another, their relationship remains tense. Kazuma does not give in to Kyo's biological father's wishes to lock up Kyo, and swears to secure a happy for future for Kyo, much to Kyo's father's resentment.

Trivia[]

  • He share shares his 2001 English voice actor with Momiji's Father.
  • His name is never mentioned.
  • The manga shows him to be more crazy than bitter when he meets Kazuma and Kyo; the anime changes it to make him very vindictive in order to make it easier to loathe him.
  • Given his ridiculous breakdown when Kyo stops him from slapping him, the father shows that he always thought Kyo would attempt to kill him in revenge for all the years of abuse and neglect.
  • Considering Rin's parents abandoned her without consequence, its unknown why he didn't attempt to do the same to Kyo against protests of his wife. Though its not impossible he only kept them around to take the abuse of his frustrations.
